Children, Teachers, and Monopoly Labor Unions…

American student scholastic performance, as compared to the rest of the world, has been declining for 4 decades. Today, the USA is second among all countries in spending per student.

In fact, spending on “education” has mushroomed! Skyrocketed! Exploded!

Now, in the real world, decades of increased spending by an organization has a reason. We expect the investment to pay off. And if it doesn’t, we re-evaluate our goals, procedures, expectations and personnel who are charged with getting the job done. The education establishment resists all of that, especially since the monopoly labor unions have taken over the monopolistic “public education” industry. The labor unions reward mediocrity and give lip service to real innovation- innovation that is deemed to be a threat to union perceived interests.

Since monopoly labor unions have gained control (National Education Association), assuring mediocrity has trumped the old fashioned idea that we should reward our best performers. American education (specifically the public school system) has become a social “re-engineering” cess pool where academic excellence has become secondary to leftist social/political indoctrination. When American students performance is compared to students from around the world, the results are clear- our students are failing..badly. American schools have become over run by leftists, overpowered by leftist union organizers (ala Saul Aliinsky) and left to do there deeds on our next generation due to a passive and uncaring generation of parents who have been “dumbed down” themselves by this system for at least two generation now.

Here is a particularly telling observation from someone who knows a bit about the problem..

from “The Blaze”:

A recently “outed” teacher union manual is just another example of the mountain of evidence supporting the fact that monopoly labor unions are denying our childern the education they deserve, considering the enormous tax burden we have applied to this industry.

Revealed: Michigan Union Manual Instructs Teachers on How to Use Children as ‘Propaganda

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 4:03pm by Becket Adams

“For more than two years, the Michigan Education Association [MEA] has had a manual that urges its members to use students as propaganda in contract negotiations and also lays out how to organize strikes,” writes Tome Gantert of Michigan Capitol Confidential.

Considering the fact that teacher strikes are illegal in Michigan, some may find it odd that the MEA has been encouraging this sort of behavior. In fact, the MEA has done a lot more than just “encourage” potentially illegal activity. As Gantert reports, the organization produced an anonymously written 28-page manual titled, “Building Full Capacity Locals — Crisis Planning, It’s Never Too Early…”

While much of the rhetoric in this “crisis planning” handbook is unsettling (”The worst time to plan for a crisis is when you are in the middle of one, so crisis planning should commence at the same time that planning for actual bargaining begins”), perhaps the most disturbing moment occurs when one section appears to quote almost verbatim Saul Alinksy’s “Rules For Radicals.

Alinsky instructs his followers to “Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.” Likewise, the MEA manual instructs teachers to “Pick a target—personalize—and polarize the opposition [pg. 17].” And those are just the verbatim quotes; the entire manual is a handbook for creating, managing, and profiting from crises. (Actually, Rules For Radicals” is one of the few books sold and featured on the NEA union website.)

Representatives of the MEA were unavailable for comment when The Blaze contacted them for more information.

“What’s really troubling about this publication isn’t what’s inside, it’s right there on the cover. This organization has decided it is above the law that has empowered them so much in so many other ways,” said Paul Kersey, director of labor policy at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, according to the Michigan Capitol Confidential article.

“We have given them the authority to represent employees who individually may not support them, and to collect dues and agency fees from them and have them fired if they refuse. But the union does not feel it is bound by the law’s prohibition of government strikes,” he said.

The manual states that the “MEA…supports and defends its members who engage in a strike,” which, again, is illegal in Michigan.

But if an out-and-out strike isn’t your thing, don’t worry! With a variety of passive aggressive protest methods, the manual has you covered. One of the passive methods suggested by the MEA is “Work-To-Rule” actions where employees refuse to do anything outside of what is included in their contract.

“Understand that a local is limited only by its collective imagination when it comes to specific work-to-rule actions,” the manual states. “If you carefully examine your contract you will probably find a number of work-to-rule opportunities. Keep in mind, however, that you don’t want to violate the contract or past practice; you want to adhere to it … exactly!”

And of course, what union protest would be complete without the exploitation of children in the bargaining process?

“In terms of a bargaining message, the public responds most positively when we talk about children, quality in the classroom and the future,” the MEA manual states. “There may come a time when it’s appropriate to talk about money and benefits, but lay the groundwork first.

The manual even suggests one slogan that it claims has worked for other locals: “It’s not about dollars and cents; it’s about our children.”

U of Missouri ‘Labor Studies’ Course Teaches How to Shut Down Non-Union Companies – Big Government

University of Missouri “class” instructs students in the art of destroying private enterprise. AFSCME Openly Threatens WI Businesses

 Organized Labor or Organized Thugs?

Gang:  A group of criminals or hoodlums who band together for mutual protection and profit.  (AFSCME?)

Well, that didn’t take long. Union threats that were somewhat isolated a couple of weeks ago are now gaining in popularity among union bosses in Wisconsin. Business owners are now receiving threatening letters telling them that, if they don’t support government-sector unions, their businesses will be boycotted.

Members of Wisconsin State Employees Union, AFSCME Council 24, have begun circulating letters to businesses in southeast Wisconsin, asking them to support workers’ rights by putting up a sign in their windows.

If businesses fail to comply, the letter says, “Failure to do so will leave us no choice but (to) do a public boycott of your business. And sorry, neutral means ‘no’ to those who work for the largest employer in the area and are union members.”

Jim Parrett, a field representative of Council 24 for Southeast Wisconsin, confirmed the contents of the letter, which carries his signature. But he added that the union was also circulating letters to businesses thanking them for supporting workers’ rights.

Parrett said he believed the letter campaign was going on in other parts of the state. His region includes Racine and Kenosha counties, as well as parts of Waukesha and Walworth counties.

“It’s going on in other parts of the state,” he said Wednesday.

Parrett referred questions to Marty Beil, the head of the Wisconsin State Employees Union. Beil was not immediately available for comment.

In the letter from Parrett to some businesses, he says that, “It is unfortunate that you have chosen ‘not’ to support public workers rights in Wisconsin. In recent past weeks you have been offered a sign by a public employee who works in one of the state facilities in the Union Grove area. These signs simply said, ‘This Business Supports Workers Rights,’ a simple, subtle and we feel non-controversial statement gives the facts at this time.”

So, by not displaying the “non-controversial” sign means, as a business owner, your business will be targeted by union bosses for a boycott. What’s next?

Will unions be demanding homeowners to put them in their windows as well? And, if they don’t…?

Wisconsin Unions Get Ugly – Labor Monopolies blackmail taxpayers and others

Definitions:

Gang: A group of criminals or hoodlums who band together for mutual protection and profit.

Union:  See above.

This is why monopoly labor is ALWAYS a poor policy, especially when applied to government employees.  It encourages bad faith, bad behavior, low quality, high costs, waste, and corruption.  Wisconsin “public labor unions” show us an excellent example of all the above.

WSJ – APRIL 1, 2011

Now they’re threatening businesses that stay neutral in the state’s budget battle.

Having lost their fight in the legislature, Wisconsin unions are now getting out the steel pipes for those who don’t step lively to their cause. A letter we’ve seen that was sent to businesses in southeastern Wisconsin shows that Big Labor’s latest strategy is to threaten small businesses with boycotts if they don’t publicly declare their support for government union monopoly power.

Dated March 28, 2011, the letter is addressed to “DEAR UNION GROVE AREA BUSINESS OWNER/MANAGER,” in Racine County. And it begins with this warm greeting: “It is unfortunate that you have chosen ‘not’ to support public workers rights in Wisconsin. In recent past weeks you have been offered a sign(s) by a public employee(s) who works in one of the state facilities in the Union Grove area. These signs simply said ‘This Business Supports Workers Rights,’ a simple, subtle and we feel non-controversial statement given the facts at this time.”

We doubt “subtle” is the word a business owner would use to describe this offer he is being told he can’t refuse.

The letter is signed by Jim Parrett, the “Field Rep.” for Council 24 of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, which is the most powerful union in the AFL-CIO. The letter presents a litany of objections to Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s changes to benefits and public union collective bargaining power, describing them as “things that make life working in a 24-7 facility tolerable.”

The missive concludes by noting that, “With that we’d ask that you reconsider taking a sign and stance to support public employees in this community. Failure to do so will leave us no choice but do [sic] a public boycott of your business. And sorry, neutral means ‘no’ to those who work for the largest employer in the area and are union members.”

So even businesses that stay neutral in the political battle are considered the enemy and will be punished. Charming stuff, and especially coming from a union that claims (wrongly) to be losing its constitutional rights. Free speech for others apparently isn’t all that important.

On Wednesday we called the telephone number listed under Mr. Parrett’s name but his voicemail was full. We then spoke with union officials who said they’d ask Mr. Parrett to call us back, but he never called. He has since confirmed the accuracy of the letter to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, which reports that the threat is an outgrowth of a boycott campaign by other unions that has targeted M&I Bank and Kwik Trip because those companies or their executives supported Mr. Walker’s budget proposals.

This kind of union thuggery is all too common and is in keeping with the larger political goal of preventing union members from exercising their own rights of free association. The Walker reform that union leaders hate the most would require unions to be recertified annually by a majority of their members and let those members opt out of paying union dues.

Union chiefs like Mr. Parrett know what that means for their political clout. After taking office in 2005, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels used an executive order to end collective bargaining for public workers—a power granted by former Governor Evan Bayh.

Union Animals Storm Bank, Demanding CEO

For the life of me, I still don’t get why so many unions don’t realize that acting like untamed beasts in public hurts their cause for amassing widespread support for their agenda.  In Wisconsin, for instance, not only did we see union supporters marching around the state capitol as a herd of cows, but they were harassing state senators at their offices and homes as well.  There were also the death threats

Now comes a story from northeast Pennsylvania, where hordes of Service Employees International Union (SEIU) fanatics stormed a bank demanding to speak to its CEO. When the request was rebuffed, the hooligans erupted into the mindless chants of “Respect our vote” and “We’ll be back.”

Watch:

The drama unfolded because the CEO of ESSA Bank is also the chairman of the board of the Pocono Medical Center.  According to local reports, SEIU reps are indignant over the board’s position that union membership and dues shouldn’t be “compulsory.”  Allowing workers the choice of whether or not to join the union isn’t a viable option apparently.

So say the protesters anyway.  That’s why they brought their bullhorns on to private property.

Yes, I know, union organizers and their sheeple believe such tactics will intimidate management into capitulation.  And sometimes it does work.  But these unhinged tactics are clearly coming at a price, as support for labor unions has plummeted.  If I were offering the SEIU’s leadership advice (and I’m not), it would be to ensure its members don’t act as though they were just released from the zoo.

As an aside, the girl at the end of the video who’s talking to a police officer is kind of cute, no?  Too bad she’s a leftist drone.  Sigh.

This is the behavior we want to reward? Where does it stop? What does this “teach” our children? Is civility, goodwill, and personal freedom ideas that we no longer value in America? Clearly, no one is in charge of the zoo.
